Mabior Garang de Mabior confirmed in a phone conversation that the below information is not true.
Mabior Garang de Mabior resigned from the SPLM/SPLA (IO) effective immediately. According to the Press Release from his mobile office seen by NCMP, Mabior said he has lost faith in the vision and principle of the party under the leadership of Dr. Riek Machar Teny.
He mentioned that He joined the movement with the objectives of implementing reforms and transforming South Sudan into the nation His father, the late Dr. John Garang de Mabior, wanted.
He said he initially believed that Dr. Riek Machar possessed the leadership and vision to modernize South Sudan and transform it into a great society, “but I was sadly mistaken.” The former minister said.
Here are some of the highlights from His resignation letter:
- Dr. Riek Machar was a critic of nepotism and favoritism but appointed his wife as the Minister of Defense. This decision was controversial, but Dr. Riek should have consulted the SPLM (IO) leadership. SPLM (IO) are reformers and believe that change must come from good governance and appointing people on merits not because of family relationships.
- SPLM (IO) has failed to control the massive defections happening inside the party. We are a movement and must attract followers and supporters, but now we are losing followers and supporters.
- Dr. Riek Machar champion reform and good governance but appointed incompetent Minister. Hon. Pout Kang Chol, Minister of Petroleum, lacks any experience, skills, and knowledge to lead a Ministry, let alone a critical Ministry like Petroleum. Hon. Pout Kang should have been allowed to work in the Office of Dr. Riek so he may learn and grow within the party leadership and rally South Sudanese youth.
Mabior referenced one of his articles, the science of the revolutionary struggle. He said the vision of the new Sudan – which delineates the principles, goals, and objectives of our historic liberation movement did not represent a geographical idea, but a philosophical concept. This vision was, in turn, inspired by the philosophy of African liberation after the great upheaval of the trans- Atlantic slave trade.
This was explained by the great Samora Machel as the “new society,” the “new man and the new woman.” The principal objective of the Sudanese revolution – the vision of new Sudan – was the “modernization of our societies and the restoration of the greatness of our people.”Hon. Elizabeth Acuei is incompetent and has failed to manage the health sector during the pandemic. Hon. Elizabeth has done nothing in SPLM (IO) politics.
According to Mabior, Dr. Riek Machar should have appointed a competent, intelligent, and knowledgeable Minister to deliver and promote the SPLM (IO) values of good governance and reforms to improve the lives of South Sudanese.
He further mentioned that Dr. Riek Machar has failed to ensure the security protocols are implemented. The abusive National Security Service in South Sudan, a legacy of the Omar Bashir era are holding the illegitimate unity Government in Juba hostage, including the President and now the First Vice President. There is no peace in South Sudan, and the security situation has deteriorated, with all-out inter-communal wars across the country.
Garang also stated in the resignation letter dated 12 July 2020 that Dr. Riek Machar Teny has forgotten about the values and objectives of the movement and now focused on the power to benefit himself and his family. As a result, he has no longer been fighting for security arrangements and reform and instead is focused on maintaining the status quo.
The former Deputy Minister of Interior, said in the letter
“I cannot lie to God and the people of South Sudan by taking the oath of office, that’s why I resigned from assuming office. This government is not serious about implementing the peace agreement.” I stand by that decision, and I declare today that I am resigning from the SPLM (IO).”
He said “I do not believe Dr. Riek Machar and the leadership of the SPLM (IO) are serious about the implementation of the security arrangements. They have not played a critical role in extending the life of the rouge and brutal regime of Salva Kiir Mayardit. I will continue to support the people of South Sudan and ensure they taste justice, liberty, and prosperity.”
