4 members of the community police force are under investigation in connection with the death of a 22-year-old man in Aweil.

Four persons have been arrested in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state for their roles in the killing of a 22-year-old man in Aweil.
The four were members of a community police team, according to reports.
They are accused of holding Aleu Dut Chan at the Mathiang community policing center without authority.
Mr. Dut was found hanging with his belt around his neck in one of the unlawful chambers.
According to the police, they had no legal authority to hold anybody at their community policing center.
After learning that a 22-year-old guy died in the cell, we closed our community policing center in Mathiang. The state police spokeswoman, Captain Guot Guot Akol, said it’s sad that community policing has gone beyond its role.
Detention, regardless of the circumstances, is not within their jurisdiction. It is not appropriate for someone to take the law into their own hands to arrest and detain someone.
“We also observed that the center was set up without the police’s knowledge and has been operational for a few months.” Four members of the community police force are now being investigated for carelessness.”
The identities of the four suspects will not be made public owing to fear of vengeance from the departed family members, according to Captain Guot.
Following a gang-related brawl, Aleu Dut Chan was allegedly apprehended by a community police team.
In the state of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, there are around 27 community policing centers.
Their mission is to reduce community-based crime while also increasing police responsibility to local communities and decentralizing command.
