African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) Repels Al-Shabaab Attack on Forward Operating Base in Buulo Mareer

The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has released a statement following an attack by Al-Shabaab militants on their Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Buulo Mareer, in the Lower Shabelle region. The attack occurred at approximately 5 am today when the militants used vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices and suicide bombers to attack the base.
Despite the initial attack, ATMIS soldiers engaged in a firefight with the terrorists, and reinforcement from ATMIS’ Aviation Unit and allies arrived quickly to join the fight. As the terrorists withdrew, the reinforcements managed to destroy the weapons they had in their possession.
In the statement, ATMIS assured the public and other entities in the country that everything was being done to bring the situation under control and that the mission remained committed in its fight against terrorism. They also confirmed that they will continue working closely with the Federal Government of Somalia, the Federal Member States, and other international partners in securing Somalia against Al-Shabaab and other armed groups.
The attack highlights the ongoing threat of terrorism in Somalia, with Al-Shabaab being responsible for numerous attacks on security forces and civilian populations in recent years. The incident underscores the urgency of ATMIS’ mission and the need for continued international cooperation to ensure the safety and security of Somalia.
