Jérémie Nduwimana, communal secretary of the CNL was arrested last Monday by the local official of the ruling party, the CNDD-FDD supported by the police. The facts took place on the hill of Ciya, in the Muramba area, in the commune and province of Bubanza (west of Burundi).
The motive for his arrest has not yet been revealed. The leaders of the first opposition political party denounced what they called “political harassment” guided by the ruling party on the eve of the elections. (SOS Media Burundi)
Witnesses said the opponent was arrested by police led by CNDD-FDD communal official Alexis Ntahomvukiye.
He was then taken to the local police cell where he is detained.
Our sources state that the reason for his arrest was not communicated to his political family or his relatives.
According to CNL officials, Jérémie Nduwimana is a victim of his political convictions. “It is absurd and inconceivable that a representative of a party should arrest another representative of another political party. Mr. Nduwimana has so far no charge against him, we demand his release and without conditions. We are protesting against this political harassment on the eve of the elections, ”they say angrily.
The man arrested has just joined a teacher at the Ciya basic school in the dungeon. Jean Marie Ndikumana was apprehended on March 9, 2020 at the invitation of a deputy public prosecutor in the province. Also a CNL activist, he would be prosecuted for leaving the CNDD-FDD, according to local CNL officials.
