The newly named United States Ambassador to South Sudan on Tuesday arrived in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.
Ambassador Michael J. Adler was appointed by U.S President Joe Biden on 26th January this year.
Adler was sworn in on August 10th in Washington, D.C by Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, who was subsequently joined by Ervin Massinga, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of African Affairs.
“He arrived in Juba on August 23 and submitted his credentials to President Salva Kiir Mayardit on August 24,” U.S Embassy stated in a statement published in Juba Thursday.
Ambassador Adler is the fourth U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan since earning independence from Sudan in 2011.
Adler, a career Foreign Service Officer joined the Department of State in 1992, he also served from 2019-2021 on the White House National Security Council staff as the Deputy Senior Director for South-Asia and Director for Afghanistan.
Besides this, Adler also served as the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs and as Director of the Office of Afghanistan Affairs.
He has served as Director of the Office of Near Eastern Affairs in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research and Director of the Office of Regional Affairs in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.
Adler’s past Washington duties have included serving as Desk Officer for Spain in the Bureau of European Affairs and Watch Officer in the Operations Center.
His foreign engagements at U.S. Embassies have included Deputy Chief of Mission in Kuwait and Lebanon, Political Counselor in Afghanistan, Deputy Political Counselor in Iraq, and posts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, and Qatar.
He worked with the Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad and Najaf and at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York.
