Kiir endorsed as the flag bearer of SPLM in upcoming elections

South Sudan’s governing Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party supported President Salva Kiir Mayardit as the party’s flag bearer in the future elections set for the conclusion of the transitional phase in December 2024 on Monday afternoon.
This comes after a meeting of the SPLM National Liberation Council (NLC) on Monday at Freedom Hall, during which the party also expelled First Vice President Machar and opposition leader Pagan Amum Okiech.
Machar, who was the first deputy chair before to the 2013 SPLM split, was replaced by Vice President James Wani Igga, while prominent SPLM members Daniel Awet Akot and Kuol Manyang Juuk were chosen as deputies for the chairman.
Following a meeting of the NLC on Monday in Juba, Kuol Atem Bol, the SPLM Secretary for Political Affairs, said that President Kiir has been supported as the governing party’s flag bearer in the next elections, which are scheduled for the conclusion of the transitional phase.
According to a top SPLM official, there would be another gathering of the liberation council from national to bomas where Kiir will be officially backed for president by the party.
“This is not the end of the process since SPLM will have conferences in Boma, Payam, County, and states.” This is where the endorsement will come from, according to Atem.
