Kiir fires Warrap state’s deputy governor, named Rebecca Oduor Ukech as replacement.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit issued a Republican Decree this evening, removing the deputy governor of the restive Warrap state, Ateny Mayor, who was selected on the OPP ticket.

The decision that was read on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) did not specify why the employees were fired.

Kiir nominated Rebecca Oduor Ukech as the new deputy governor in a separate decree.

Ayen is the only governor or deputy governor who was not born in the state in which she was serving. She is, however, a Dinka Atout politician from Lakes state who is married to Joseph Lual Acuil, a former minister of humanitarian affairs.

She is a close friend of Peter Mayen, the former OPP leader and current Minister of Humanitarian Affairs. They both belong to the People’s Liberal Party.
