Lawmaker Encourages South Sudanese Youth to Embrace Politics and Development
A member of the Western Equatoria State Legislative Assembly, Hon. Diako Pouline, representing Yambio Central Payam under the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) ticket, has challenged the youth across the country to actively engage in politics.
Speaking before a gathering of thousands of youths in Yambio, Hon. Diako emphasized the need for the youth to have a voice and play an active role in shaping the future of South Sudan.
Highlighting that 70% of South Sudan’s population is comprised of young people, Hon. Diako emphasized that their participation in politics is crucial to address the current challenges and shape the country’s affairs.
She encouraged the youth to become politicians themselves or support other young leaders, emphasizing that their collective engagement can bring about positive changes in the policies governing the nation.
Urging the youth to maintain responsible and inclusive politics, Hon. Diako drew inspiration from sports, highlighting its ability to bring people together regardless of tribe, state, or culture.
She called for politics to unite the nation and promote peace, urging her fellow youths to reject divisive politics, revenge, or violence against each other.
In addition to political engagement, Hon. Diako emphasized the importance of economic activities for youth prosperity. She encouraged the youth to pursue farming and small-scale businesses, emphasizing the potential benefits at an individual and group level.
Rather than relying solely on white-collar jobs, she emphasized the need for the youth to embrace entrepreneurship and contribute to the economic development of the country.
With the upcoming 2024 general elections in sight, Hon. Diako stressed the importance of unity among the youth. She called for their voice to be one of support, peace, and unity, urging them to pursue their rights through peaceful means and avoid resorting to violence or act as a threat to one another.
Hon. Diako also urged the youth to prioritize education, emphasizing that they are the future leaders and the backbone of South Sudan and its respective states.
She called on the government to provide an enabling environment that allows the youth to express their ideas and contribute to the economic growth and development of the nation.
As one of the youngest lawmakers in the Western Equatoria State Legislative Assembly, Hon. Diako Pouline brings valuable experience from her previous role as President of the Gbudue Football Team in Uganda. Her appointment to represent the youth in 2021 demonstrates a commitment to engaging young voices in state affairs.
With Hon. Diako’s call for youth empowerment and increased participation in politics and economic activities, South Sudan can harness the potential of its youthful population to foster development, unity, and progress for the nation’s future.
