Raila arrives in Juba ahead bridge commissioning

Raila Odinga, the Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate, arrived in Juba, South Sudan on Wednesday evening ahead of the commissioning of a 3.6-kilometer bridge that would link Juba to the rest of East Africa.
President Salva Kiir will commission the bridge on Thursday, May 19, according to the new nation’s Information Minister Michael Makuei.

The bridge links Gumbo and Lologo and is projected to relieve traffic congestion on the Gumbo Bridge, which has undergone multiple renovations and has hindered the movement of huge vehicles bringing products from East Africa.
Kenyan Ambassador to South Sudan Major General Samuel Nandwa and Roads Minister Simon Mijak Mijok greeted Raila.
The building of the Freedom Bridge was suspended twice.
On Wednesday, May 18, 2022, ODM leader Raila Odinga will be greeted by South Sudan Roads Minister Simon Mijak Mijok.
A disagreement between South Sudan and Japanese contractors forced the workers to flee in 2016.
Construction was resumed in 2019, but soon afterwards, Covid 19 struck, prompting another evacuation.
In 2019, the Japanese government donated an extra $28 million to the bridge’s original projected cost of $91 million.
