Arem Riak – The 1967 Massacre of 24 Bor chiefs including paramount Sultan Ajang Duot: why Sadig Almahdi killed them? There was anyanya Rebel movement in Southern Sudan at that time, and Sadig Almahdi was the Sudanese Prime Minister/ President.
However on the fateful week, he had made a state visit to Somalia, and while in Somalia, his cousin 1st Lt Zuheir Bayoumi, a military officer attached to Malualchaat Barracks ,5 Kilometers South of Bor town was ambushed and murdered by suspected Anyanya Guerila fighters between Malek and Malualchaat Barracks.
Geographically, The whole Bor area from Kolnyang to Duk settlement is linear. This means that: River Nile to the West of every Bor village, Then Trans-African Highway(road) from Nimule to Renk comes the second to the River Nile in the linear arrangement and then the villages to the east of both the River and the Highway in the same linear method.
Remember both Malek and Malualchaat are on the River Nile and the Highway passes east of them meaning Malek and Malualchaat are between the River Nile and the Highway and Villages further east of them and east of the Bor area villages are the bushes or forests that are part of Boma National Park and the Anyanya one rebels were harboring there in the bushes east of the Villages.
Now what transpired was that Sadig Almahdi on hearing the news of the death of his cousin, cut short the state visit and flew back to Sudan but first made a stopover in Bor before Khartoum. He never landed in Juba but straight away from Mogadishu to Bor and then went where Zuheir Bayoumi was buried. He saluted his tomb and shed tears and came back to Bor Airstrip and took off to Khartoum without talking to anyone. He questioned that how could rebels pass through the villages up to Malek and Malualchaat near Bor town on the River Nile to kill his cousin brother?
Meaning the chiefs or all Bor villagers are Anyanya Collaborators, he concluded. Now while in Khartoum after two days from taking off at Bor, he ordered all Bor Chiefs to be executed or killed to pay for the death of his cousin brother.
Therefore, all the 24 Bor Chiefs including Paramount Chiefs Ajang Duot Bior were arrested by the Sudanese army and mercilessly slaughtered or killed. This is the basis of what and who killed the 24 Bor chiefs in 1967.
