South Sudan to recruit local water tanker drivers to replace experts

The Juba City Council in South Sudan is planning to replace foreign national drivers of water tankers for their failure to obey calls to reduce the price of water supplies in the city.
This comes after the price of water has increased from 1,000 SSP to 1,500 SSP per drum of 200 liters, which has caused outrage among citizens who have complained to the council.
The city council warned the water tanker drivers to sell water at the stipulated government-approved rate; failure to follow the order will lead to immediate impoundment of their vehicles.
Juma Kulang Laku, the driver union’s chairperson, urged the council to follow through on the order and ensure job opportunities for the locals.
The council is now considering local driver recruitment for water tankers and plans to enforce the local order on water tanker drivers.
Additionally, the Chairperson of the driver’s union stated their readiness to register drivers and take more responsibility for the water supply in Juba.
Michael Ladu Thomas Allah-Jabu, the Mayor of Juba, has issued an order to regulate water supply prices till June 30, 2023. Under the directive, water suppliers are to charge 800 Pounds per drum for nearby locations and 1,000 SSP for other locations.
“The economic hardship should not be borne by common citizens”, says Thiik Thiik Mayardit, the Juba City Council Deputy Mayor.
To ensure compliance, the council will deploy task forces to monitor the water tanker drivers’ activities in the city.
