Tanzania reopens schools, urges schools’ management to observe COVID-19 guidelines

Tanzanian health authorities on Sunday urged the management of schools and other learning institutions to strictly observe COVID-19 protective guidelines as they reopen.

“School authorities should ensure they follow COVID-19 guidelines to protect students from the pandemic,” said Abel Makubi, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, a day before the schools across the country reopen.

He told a news conference in the capital Dodoma that school authorities should install facilities for washing hands with soap and ensure that face masks and sanitizers are available and used at all times.

“The health status of students should be monitored frequently,” said Makubi.

On June 29, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan warned that the third wave of the pandemic has already swept across the country in which there were over 100 COVID-19 patients admitted to hospitals.

Hassan said reports from border regions indicated that the situation was alarming.
