UN Urges South Sudan’s Unity Government to Prioritize Peace Agreement Implementation

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has called on the country’s unity government to prioritize the implementation of the peace agreement’s roadmap, emphasizing the need to address internal security challenges and avoid the pitfalls witnessed in neighboring Sudan. Nicholas Haysom, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS highlighted the urgency of resolving outstanding tasks and ensuring the timely organization of free, fair, and credible elections.
Speaking during a press conference in Juba, Haysom underscored the critical importance of continued progress toward the full implementation of the South Sudanese roadmap. He urged the government and all parties involved in the peace agreement to remain focused and steadfast in their efforts to overcome challenges and pave the way for lasting peace.
With the ongoing crisis in Sudan serving as a stark reminder of the consequences of inaction, Haysom warned against delays in the implementation process. The UN representative cautioned that South Sudan stands at a crucial juncture in 2023, describing it as a make-or-break moment for the nation. Urging the government not to take their eyes off the board, he stressed the need to prioritize the vital work ahead and avoid squandering the progress achieved thus far.
South Sudan has been grappling with internal security challenges and striving to stabilize the country since gaining independence in 2011. The peace agreement signed in 2018 between President Salva Kiir and his former deputy, Riek Machar, was seen as a significant step towards resolving the protracted conflict. However, progress has been slow, and the UN has consistently emphasized the importance of full and timely implementation.
The UNMISS is closely monitoring the situation in South Sudan, offering support and guidance to ensure the successful realization of the peace agreement. As the nation approaches a pivotal moment in its history, the international community remains hopeful that South Sudan’s unity government will heed the UN’s call, accelerate progress, and secure a peaceful and prosperous future for its people.
