UN Warns South Sudan Faces Unraveling if Conflict in Neighboring Sudan Persists
JUBA, South Sudan – The United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has issued a grave warning, expressing concerns that the ongoing war in neighboring Sudan could have far-reaching consequences, potentially leading to the unraveling of South Sudan. Nicholas Haysom, the head of UNMISS, delivered a stern message to reporters in the capital, Juba, emphasizing the need for urgent action to halt the conflict.
Highlighting the interdependence between the two nations, Haysom warned that South Sudan would suffer the ripple effects of the conflict raging in Sudan. Of particular concern is the possible disruption of South Sudan’s crucial oil pipeline, which serves as the sole means of exporting its abundant crude oil through Sudan. Any interference with this lifeline would trigger an immediate impact on South Sudan’s economy, compromising the country’s ability to provide essential services and pay salaries to its citizens.
“In that regard, we would certainly want to argue – loudly, strongly, repeatedly – that the war has to come to an end,” urged Mr. Haysom, underscoring the urgency of resolving the conflict.
The war, now entering its sixth week, has already resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis. According to the United Nations, close to one million people have been displaced due to the relentless fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The scale of displacement has overwhelmed aid agencies and strained resources, leaving vulnerable populations in dire need of assistance.
The repercussions have also been felt in South Sudan, as over 70,000 South Sudanese returnees, fleeing the conflict across the border, have sought refuge in their homeland. This influx further exacerbates the strain on South Sudan’s already fragile resources and infrastructure, requiring immediate attention and support.
The UNMISS head’s words serve as a stark reminder of the precarious situation in the region, urging the international community to prioritize efforts to end the conflict in Sudan. The interconnectedness of these crises demands a comprehensive approach to address the root causes, promote stability, and safeguard the well-being of the affected populations.
As South Sudan closely watches its northern neighbor’s fate, the call for swift and decisive action to prevent the unraveling of the country is louder than ever. The stakes are high, not only for South Sudan’s economic stability but also for the millions of lives caught in the crossfire.
In the face of this pressing crisis, the international community must unite to bring an end to the conflict in Sudan, ensuring the prospects of a secure and prosperous future for both nations.
