Unrest Erupts in Abyei Town as UN Forces Clash with Local Armed Youth
Tensions flared in Abyei town as clashes broke out between UN forces and local armed youth, referred to as Titbaai. The unrest unfolded on the heels of a previous day’s fighting in Abyei, resulting in a significant number of wounded individuals, mainly Nuer, being housed at the MS hospital.
Reports indicate that at 2:45 PM, armed youth from Abyei forcefully attempted to remove Nuer patients from the hospital, which was met with resistance by the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). The Titbaai group, incensed by the loss of their fellow Ngok people in the previous day’s conflict, breached the hospital to exact revenge on the wounded.
In response to this breach, the United Nations organization utilized force to counter the unlawful attack carried out by the Abyei armed groups, subsequently expelling Titbaai forces from the MS hospital in Abyei town. As of now, the exact casualties resulting from this disturbing incident remain to be tallied.
It’s a concerning development and highlights the fragility of the situation in Abyei, underscoring the urgent need for dialogue and de-escalation efforts to prevent further violence.
